CSR & Corporate Governance Alignment in AI Systems
Implementing the EBEN GR AI Audit Recommendation
“Alignment of CSR and Corporate Governance: Standardising the connection between corporate governance, social responsibility, and the development of AI systems, with the aim of strengthening the ethical and social value of technology.”
EBEN GR Recommendation — AI Audit
Purpose
In response to the recommendation issued during the EBEN GR AI Ethics Audit, Lemur Maritime formally commits to aligning its corporate governance framework, CSR commitments, and the development or deployment of any AI-assisted tools and systems. This section establishes the principles and structure for this alignment, consistent with the BEE AI Framework (Business Ethics Excellence in Artificial Intelligence) developed under the auspices of EBEN GR, the ISO 26000 organisational governance core subject, and the EU AI Act (2024).
The EBEN 2025 Annual Conference — themed “Artificial Intelligence, Business Ethics and Corporate Responsibility: Challenges and Opportunities for Business and Society” — confirmed that integrating AI into business practices is not merely a technological concern, but a fundamentally ethical one, requiring corporate governance to be the primary safeguard.
The Alignment Framework
Lemur Maritime adopts a three-pillar alignment model connecting Corporate Governance, CSR (per ISO 26000), and AI Systems Development.
Responsible AI Governance Commitments
In alignment with the BEE AI Framework and the EBEN GR Responsible Management Excellence (RME) Model, Lemur Maritime commits to the following.
- Governance Integration — AI-related decisions — including the adoption of any AI tool in audit, training, or fleet management services — are subject to management review and are evaluated against Lemur Maritime’s ethical and CSR commitments prior to implementation.
- Ethical Leadership — Management takes personal responsibility for the ethical use of AI within Lemur Maritime, in line with EBEN GR’s principle that “ethical leadership sets the tone from the top”. Only 11% of executives globally report implementing responsible AI practices across their organisations; Lemur Maritime commits to being among those who lead by example.
- Algorithmic Transparency — Where AI tools are used to generate reports, risk assessments, or training recommendations, this use is disclosed clearly to the recipient. The basis for AI-assisted conclusions is made available upon request.
- Bias Awareness — Prior to adopting any AI-assisted platform (e.g., fleet management software, training needs analysis tools), Lemur Maritime evaluates the tool for potential algorithmic bias that could negatively affect seafarers, particularly with respect to nationality, certification status, or employment type.
- Stakeholder Dialogue — Lemur Maritime engages with its maritime clients, seafarers, and industry partners on the implications of AI in safety and compliance processes, ensuring that the human element remains central to all AI-assisted decisions.
- Continuous Review — The use of AI tools and this alignment policy are reviewed annually in conjunction with the Code of Ethics review, reflecting developments in EBEN GR guidance, EU AI Act compliance requirements, and IMO digital transformation initiatives.
Connection to the EU AI Act
The EU AI Act (2024) — the world’s first comprehensive AI regulation — requires risk-based governance for AI systems, mandating risk assessments, bias-free datasets, documentation for auditability, and human oversight for critical decisions. While Lemur Maritime is a small enterprise, the Act’s principles apply to AI tools used in sectors such as maritime safety, employment (crew management), and training. Lemur Maritime proactively aligns with these requirements as part of its commitment to responsible governance, in anticipation of full regulatory applicability from 2026 onwards.
